Setting: The setting of The Belgariad is rather complex at a glance. It is at its heart a very traditional medieval fantasy setting, drawing heavily on medieval Europe for inspiration, and the technology and society is roughly equivalent to that. A form of sorcery exists -- known as the Will and the Word -- but most of its remaining practitioners are thousands of years old, and many people of the world regard sorcery as a fiction. The two most famous sorcerers by far are Belgarath the Sorcerer, who is seven thousand years old, and his daughter Polgara the Sorceress, who is four thousand years old. Their names are the stuff of legend, and in some places, myth, but they are quite real and active in the world.

The world has a long and complex history which began with the creation of the world at the hands of the Gods, UL and his seven sons: Belar, Torak, Aldur, Chaldan, Issa, Mara, and Nedra. With the exception of Aldur, each of these gods eventually chose a people to guide and watch over. Belar, the youngest god whose totem is the bear, chose the Alorns, belligerent and warlike, as his people. However, the great nation of Aloria was split into four countries (of still substantial size) during the Second Age, divided among the then-King of Aloria, Cherek, and his three sons, Dras, Algar, and Riva, forming the kingdoms of Cherek, Drasnia, Algaria, and Riva that exist now.

The other major kingdoms in the West include Nyissa, the jungle land of the snake people; Tolnedra, the Roman-esque Empire to the south; Arendia, the romantic land of knights and civil war; Sendaria, a young nation comprised of people descended from most places elsewhere; and the assorted kingdoms of the Angaraks, the people of the vicious Dragon God Torak. Angaraks are, for the most part, the token Bad Guy race, and the religion they practice in reverence to Torak involves human sacrifices several times a day. Angaraks and other Westerners generally don’t get along, and there is a particular racial feud between the Alorns and the Angaraks.

This stems from the complex history between the two peoples, as well as of the world itself. Much of the ongoing conflict, however, involves the God Torak and a peculiar stone (okay, MacGuffin) known as the Orb of Aldur, named so for its cultivation from an ordinary pebble into a powerful magical device by Torak’s solitary brother Aldur. The Orb has a will of its own, and although it is not sentient, it does have enormous power. The Orb was once stolen from Aldur by Torak, who used it to reave a supercontinent in two, creating a huge ocean between them. The Orb, however, displeased by Torak’s actions, responded by burning his left hand and the left side of his face with blue fire in rebuke; from that moment on, the Orb would respond in kind to anyone who touched it. Many years later during the Third Age, Belgarath led Cherek and his sons to retrieve the Orb from Torak, and the Orb was given to Cherek’s son Riva for his line to protect for all time, for he alone had a heart pure enough to hold the Orb without it burning him. The protection of the unfathomably powerful Orb was the true reason for the division of Aloria; Riva took up the Isle of the Winds as his kingdom, whose isolation made it an ideal place for the Orb. One of Belgarath’s daughters was married to Riva, tying their fates to the Orb forever, and the Isle of the Winds became the Kingdom of Riva.

Near the end of the Third Age, over a millennium later, the Queen of Nyissa ordered the assassination of the entire Rivan family at the behest of one of Torak’s disciples. Every one of them except for the King’s youngest grandson was killed; however, Geran’s survival was kept a secret so that Belgarath and Polgara could protect his line for the eventual fulfillment of the prophecies. The Rivan Warder assumed administrative duty over the kingdom for the next millennium or so. It was not until in very recent history, when one of Torak’s disciples devised a way to steal the Orb from Riva, that the fruit of the Rivan line was restored to the throne. Along with his companions and guides, King Belgarion, a boy raised as Garion on a farmstead by Polgara, retrieved the Orb and killed Torak, and resumed the Rivan throne. King Belgarion and Riva’s protection of the Orb of Aldur are key aspects of the world, especially for Alorn countries, as all Alorn nations -- not just Riva -- consider the protection of the Orb their utmost responsibility.

Drasnia is a cold, wet nation located in the north of the western continent. Bordered on the west by Cherek and the south by Algaria, most of Drasnia is open, hilly land. To the north are the moors, and in the southwest near the Algarian border are the fens. This mostly makes for unpleasant, mucky weather, with uncomfortably humid summers and cold, bitter winters. Its capital, Boktor, is located near the center of the country, at the fork of the Mrin River.

In the millennia following the division of Aloria, each Alorn nation has developed into its own distinct culture. While all Alorns still share some cultural traits in common, Drasnians are without a doubt the most shrewd and cunning, and especially adept at trade and business. Drasnia boasts one of the largest merchant economies in the West, perhaps second only to Tolnedra, and the single largest and most resourceful intelligence service in the entire world. They say that if he so wished, the King of Drasnia could know what a monarch in a nation on the other side of the continent had for breakfast. In Drasnia, spies are everywhere -- most Drasnian merchants double as spies for the Intelligence Service on the side, and in most populated parts of the country, especially the capital, it is almost always a safe assumption that you’re being watched. The Drasnian people’s knack for commerce and espionage arises from their natural cultural tendencies -- they enjoy elaborate games and jokes, as well as keeping secrets for the sake of amusement. The typically Drasnian sense of humor is dry and sardonic, and often self-deprecating. Their Alorn cousins tend to find the Drasnian tendency to veil everything in layers of secrecy to be tiresome, however.

Drasnia, like most of the other nations in the world, is a monarchy and has been since Dras Bull-neck founded the nation. The current King of Drasnia is the young Kheva, but as his father Rhodar died when he was too young to assume the throne, his mother Queen Porenn was declared queen regent with the full endorsement of King Belgarion, King of Riva and Overlord of the West. Because Alorn society, like much of the rest of the world, doesn’t tend to take women very seriously, Porenn’s designation as queen regent was heavily controversial.

The Drasnian crown oversees all matters both domestic and international, including their extensive spy network. The Drasnian Intelligence Service is likely the single most important institution in their entire country and has spies and information brokers all over the world. There is an academy that enterprising young Drasnians enroll in to join the service, but such an education is not always required. In fact, many people who work for the Drasnian Intelligence Service are not Drasnian at all; it does, after all, pay to have all sorts of people who can get into all sorts of places. The Intelligence Service also a utilizes a kind of subtle signed language known as the Drasnian secret language; adepts at the secret language are more than capable of maintaining a mundane conversations with their voices while their fingers do the real talking. The secret language is largely intended for use by spies, but given the nature of Drasnia and that most people could qualify as spies, in practice most city Drasnians know it, as well as do non-Drasnians with connections to the Intelligence Service. The Intelligence Service, of course, keeps a list of every known adept at the secret language. It pays to know these sorts of things. The Drasnian Intelligence Service is headed by Margrave Khendon, a man usually known by the name Javelin. The service’s most secret spy is code-named Hunter; Hunter is usually sent on delicate, long-term missions that require heavy infiltration or a special kind of finesse. Hunter’s current identity is known only to Javelin, and Hunter can be anyone at any given time; Hunter is not necessarily Drasnian, either.

Personality: On the outside, Porenn is a warm and kind sort of woman with a dignified but pleasant demeanor. She is kindhearted in many ways, especially with her naturally maternal nature -- even before the birth of her son, she was the nurturing, mothering sort. She is emotionally savvy and empathetic, quick to recognize and understand what others are feeling. She likes to tease others, but it’s usually in good humor. Those she loves and considers close to her are loved indeed, and Porenn would gladly fight for her loved ones.

Porenn is incredibly patient; it’s what makes her so good at what she does. Her demeanor is attentive and dignified, and she rarely loses her temper. She may well become irritated or annoyed -- she certainly isn’t unshakable by any stretch of the imagination -- but she’s usually fairly good at not showing it in public. It is, after all, part of being the queen of a nation of spies. It takes quite a lot to make Porenn truly angry, and if you’ve gotten to that point, you’re likely in a lot of trouble.

What allows her to thrive in her role as well as she does is not only her patience, but her “ironclad resolve,” as Belgarion calls it. Porenn has an enormous sense of dignity and an absolute determination underneath her ladylike exterior, and though she rarely takes direct methods, she certainly doesn’t let anyone steamroll her. Porenn has a strong sense of duty to both her country and her son, and she believes in the urgency of her success as queen regent. She refuses to let anyone have the satisfaction of taking her down.

Her patient, maternal demeanor belies the depth of her intelligence. Porenn is both clever and resourceful, putting together things rather quickly in her mind and seeing connections that others may not be able to make, and although she often plays it down because of the restricted gender roles of her society, underestimating her is usually a grave mistake. Although she is not a bitter person, she does delight in taking down others a notch when they’ve overlooked her. She has a wry sense of humor and a typically Drasnian sensibility, although she is not quite so cynical as most of the men around her. She is rather the realist, seeing clearly the shortest path between point A and point B, and often how to get there as well. She compartmentalizes very well, and although she is an (inwardly, at least) emotional person, she is well capable of putting those feelings aside to get the job done; it is a rare thing that her emotions get the best of her.

Upon arriving on Tu Vishan, Porenn will inevitably feel a sense of loss -- being separated from her young son so soon after losing her husband will be difficult for her, but Porenn is capable of setting that aside for at least the time being. Her primary concern will be, at first, to learn more about the place she’s come to. She’s unlikely to reveal to anyone, especially at first, her position and status in her own world, preferring to keep things on the discreet side.

Appearance: In canon, Porenn is only described as a tiny blonde. She is only about 5’ tall, and usually wears her hair straight down her back like most Drasnian women. Her PB is Emilie de Ravin:

Abilities: Porenn has a vast repertoire of skills under her belt as Queen of Drasnia. Although she is quite an ordinary human, she is exceptionally skilled at maneuvering politics and manipulating others to greater ends. She has masterminded more than one complicated scheme in her time, including the dissolution of the Bear-Cult in Drasnia, and she is a deft politician; even before her husband’s death, she had taken over handling domestic matters while Rhodar handled international affairs. She is an expert in information trafficking and the decisions that come along with it -- when and where to use the information you have, what to keep secret and what to divulge, how to use information to manipulate people and circumstances -- these are all well within Porenn’s capability.

Although as Queen she does more of managing other spies than much spying herself anymore, she certainly has the skill set. Lying comes as easy to her as breathing, and although she isn’t unshakable by any means, she has one hell of a poker face. Conducting difficult negotiations with a smile on her face is key. Espionage might as well be her middle name (she is Drasnian, after all), and although she’s had rare occasion to use it since her marriage to Rhodar, she has training in hand-to-hand and knife combat. And, of course, she is an expert in the Drasnian secret language.

Inventory: Porenn won’t be arriving with much on her, mostly just her clothes (a black gown, as she’s still in deepest mourning) and a couple of small knives concealed on her person for protection.

Suite: Earth Sector, 2 floors. The Earth Sector would probably be most familiar to her, as would the architecture of the suites. Two floors would be more than sufficient for Porenn; although she’s a queen, she’s a practical woman and certainly not one prone toward extravagance.

In-Character Samples:
Third Person: On the whole, Porenn thinks that she’s taking all of this rather well. Stranded in some other world, apparently, with no connections, no resources, no friends -- well, a lesser woman might have panicked. Panic is not so much Porenn’s wheelhouse. She observes, assesses, and proceeds as necessary. That doesn’t change here, but it would rather help if she weren’t so terribly alone.

She feels more alone than she is, she recognizes that. She’s had some time to grieve for her husband, but Rhodar’s death still feels fresh -- and her son, still only a boy with only his mother left, now worlds away. The apartments she’s been given are more than sufficient -- rather tasteful, actually -- but compared to the hustle and bustle of the palace at Boktor, the round-the-clock shifts of spies and royal meetings, this place feels terribly quiet. She has a kingdom to run, an international spy network to oversee, and, most importantly, a child to raise. She can do none of those things here. It is difficult not to dwell on it, at least at first.

But she mustn’t. As always, the little queen must carry on. Alone and in a foreign land on which she has very limited information -- well, it’s a bit like being on assignment for the Drasnian Intelligence Service again. The first step, as always, is gathering information. She’ll know what to do from there. Although, for the first time in a very long time, there are no spies watching her and she is truly alone in her suite, she draws herself up to her full height, squaring her tiny shoulders and lifting her chin in determination.

“Well, I suppose that’s that, then,” she murmurs to herself. “We all have our jobs to do.”

Network: [ Porenn isn’t at all familiar with this kind of technology at all -- they’ve nothing like it back in her world -- but after a succinct explanation courtesy of the kedan and a bit of fiddling with it, she rather thinks she’s got the hang of it. Staring back at the terminal screen is a tiny, bright-eyed blonde woman with a curious light in her eyes. ]

My goodness -- well, isn’t this interesting? The kedan say it’s not sorcery, but unfortunately, they neglected to explain how it works, exactly -- only how to use it.

[ A wry smile. She’d very much like to see how it’s put together. ]

At any rate, I suppose I should introduce myself. My name is Porenn, and I’ve only just arrived here to this...rather charming place. My quarters are in the Earth Sector -- I don’t suppose any of you who’ve been here longer would mind showing me the neighborhood, so to speak? Oh, I’m sure I could explore the city on my own, but it would be nice to have some company.

[ She doesn’t mention where she’s from, or more importantly, that she’s royalty. It’s not as if anyone here really needs to know, and that sort of thing might only hinder her in the future. She speaks with a smile on her face, but her fingers are doing something else entirely: to most it may only look like she’s gesturing as she speaks, but she’s actually leaving a secret message for anyone who might be able to detect it: If you can read this, contact me immediately. And let’s keep things discreet, shall we? ]
